  • Ethiopia: Gov’t moves to shut down MiMi Sibhatu’s FM radio as she refused to cancel EthiopikaLink

    by Daniel Berhane

Ethiopia’s media licensing agency moves to shut down FM 90.7 of Zami Public Connections, as the radio refuses to cancel its popular radio program, EthiopikaLink.

The radio station, owned by veteran journalist Mimi Sebhatu – former reporter of the Voice of America (VOA) Amharic service, and her husband Zerihun Teshome, is Ethiopia’s first private FM.

According to the letter leaked to HornAffairs, the Ethiopian Broadcast Authority (EBA) ordered indefinite termination of the station as of today, June 18, 2015.

The dispute between the radio station and EBA revolve around a popular radio show EthiopikaLinkwhich is run by journalist Birhane Nigussie and known for its insider stories, among others.

EBA had issued an ultimatum, at the beginning of last week, demanding the radio take-down EthiopikaLink or face closure. The radio station, however, refused to comply claiming the order isPhoto - Mimi Sebhatu unconstitutional and undermines the integrity of the station.

EthiopikaLink was previously taken down, in August 2012, from Fana radio – owned by ruling party parastatals – after airing a politically sensitive gossip. Months later, the show resumed on FM 90.7, where it is still hosted.

An editor of the show, speaking in a private conversation last December, had toldHornAffairs that they are pleased with their current editorial independence. It appears Mimi Sebhatu is trying to live up to that perception by refusing to take down the program.

According to sources in the radio station, EBA’s displeasure with the show is related to a segment on Artist Daniel Tegegn, about whom unpleasant details were presented.

ketaHornAffairs was not able to confirm the details as EBA’s chief was not immediately available, while Mimi Sebhatu politely declined to comment on the matter without confirming or denying anything.

Nevertheless, the sources asserted that there has been a long paper trail between EBA and the radio station – most of which were CC’d to several senior officials, including the Prime Minister’s office.

The radio station announced to its staff this morning that its services will be halted at 2 pm, in compliance with EBA’s orders.

Yet, the radio was still on air at the writing of this news. Which is indicative of differences of opinions in the power corridors, which might have paused the orders for shut down .

FM 90.7 was one of the first two FM radios launched nine years ago. It was widely considered as a loosening of the tight grip on electronic media. Yet, so far, only two more FM radios had been licensed and that happened last year.

The radio is perceived as pro-government and. apparently for that very reason, it was denied the opportunity to host a British funded 6.3 million dollars worth show. Yet, ruling party officials often grumble about the segments aired on the radio.

The move to close the FM radio, if it materializes, would signal the final chapter in the history of Ethiopian private media.

  • Toronto police searching for two Ethiopians in a hit-and-run collision that killed a mother of three

‘Persons of interest’ identified in Bloor St. hit and run

Police are asking for the public's help in determining their whereabouts on Sunday and Monday

Two men have been identified as “persons of interest” in a hit-and-run collision on Bloor St. W. Sunday evening that killed a Toronto mother of three.
Police are now asking for the public’s help in determining where Kebreab Ashame, 34, and Deriba Wakene, 55, were on Sunday and Monday. Mother killed in hit-and-run had ‘a very good heart’
mom3Nelisa DaMota was walking across the street near Dovercourt Rd. at around 9 p.m. Sunday when she was hit by a westbound car. The collision threw her into the path of a second vehicle, which also hit her.
She was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The first vehicle fled the scene of the crash, while the second driver remained at the scene.
Toronto police Const. Clint Stibbe said investigators believe the first driver would have known they had hit something.
DaMota was a mother of three who worked as an administrator at Top Choice Realty Inc.
“She was a very kind person, good heart. She had a very good heart,” said Mahsa Dehghani, a receptionist at Top Choice who worked with DaMota. “I’m really going to miss her.”
The crash sparked a search for a white Mercedes. Police later received a call from the lawyer for the car’s registered owner, saying the vehicle was at 30 Dominion Rd., and that it was a white 1991 Mercedes Benz 420 SEL.
Investigators had asked for any business owners along Bloor St. with surveillance footage of such a vehicle to contact them.
Police reported Tuesday that they had found the Mercedes, and that it was now in their possession.

  • U.S. State Department issues travel alert for Ethiopia concerning the upcoming election

U.S. State Department issues Ethiopia Travel Alert

    Source; State Department

The State Department alerts U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Ethiopia of the upcoming elections scheduled for May 24, 2015. U.S. citizens are urged to exercise caution and remain abreast of the security situation throughout the electoral period. This Travel Alert expires on June 30, 2015.

The State Department recommends U.S. citizens maintain a high level of security awareness during the electoral period and avoid political rallies, polling centers, demonstrations, and crowds of any kind as instances of unrest can occur. Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Although there have been no specific incidents of violence targeting U.S. citizens, U.S. citizens are urged to exercise caution and stay current with media coverage of local events. Election results are scheduled to be announced June 22, 2015.

During previous elections, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) required all diplomats and international organization staff living in Addis Ababa to receive an official pass from the MFA if they planned to travel outside of Addis Ababa during the election season. While not in effect this election, the U.S. Embassy continues to urge U.S. citizens to be aware of election sensitivities. We especially recommend avoiding public polling stations on the day of the election, including schools and other public buildings. In Addis Ababa alone there will be nearly 1,600 polling stations – roughly one polling station for every kilometer.

We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Ethiopia enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at travel.state.gov. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. Embassy or nearest U.S. Consulate to contact you in an emergency. If you do not have Internet access, contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to enroll directly.

Regularly monitor the State Department's website, where you can find current Travel Warnings, Travel Alerts, and the Worldwide Caution. Read the Country Specific Information for Ethiopia. For additional information, refer to the "Traveler's Checklist" on the State Department's website.

The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa is located at Entoto Street, P.O. Box 1014. The Consular Section of the Embassy may be reached by telephone: +251-111-306000 or e-mail at consacs@state.gov, and is open Monday-Thursday, 7:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. For after-hours emergencies, U.S. citizens should call +251-111-306911 or 011-130-6000 and ask to speak with the duty officer.
